My problem is, I have no idea what I'm looking for.
I don't want one of those cheap midget-tablets, yet I can't afford one of the real big ones.
I need something in between.
Please recommend me one, if possible based on personal experience.
Information about brands I should stay away from is also welcomed.

Ah ok so you are looking for a mid-priced and mid-sized tablet. If you want one in the $500 (USD) range, I would recommend the Intuos3 12x12 tablet my wacom.
