Links that link to Reputation

This is actually quite an important bug that should be fixed ASAP.

As we all know, linking to a reputation button isn't allowed, and when you try to do it, Jacob has expertly designed to site to reject this. People who try to do it will receive a screen like this:



However, if a person uses a website that shortens links, like bit.ly, this screen is bypassed and the user will be able to link their rep. This is a hole that must be fixed ASAP. Think about what would happen when people catch wind of this?

I can see it already. Person A hates Person B, so he puts links that -Rep Person B in his posts or his signature, disguised as "Click Me!". What's even worse is that when you use a URL shortener, the person clicking the link don't even know it's a trap. This method can also be used to unfairly harvest +Rep or -Rep (if you're a troll).

Now that this has been brought to the open, I hope Admins can see the severity of the issue and patch it quickly.

Meh, I say get rid of the rep system entirely. It's worthless to people who don't care about it, and it's an unhealthy way for people that care to boost their ego.

The comment up/down actually serves a purpose since it filters out spams/first. The -rep/+rep doesn't. If you don't like or disagree with someone's post, they should just reply to it or ignore.

Jake tried that for a month around two years ago. It doesn't work because a large proportion of uploaders stop uploading so the Rep system was brought back.

I advocated getting rid of the Rep system in IB alone back in 2009, but that didn't work out either.

I'm still suggesting that we just remove the Negative Rep. That way uploaders who "cares" would still want to upload, and there won't be anymore -rep drama (all dramas stems from -Rep).

If anyone abuses it we will just IP ban them and reset the reputation back, just report it to an admin. That will have to do for now, I'll start working on a better system.

This may just be happening with me, my rep was about 19, but I've been getting reg reps everyday and now it came to 7...

Err, I can care less about the rep system =.=

Most of the uploads are either by the admins and mods of the site, or translation groups. I can hardly see uploads slowing by getting rid of the rep system.

I'll appreciate actual comments and thanks from real people, rather than some stupid +1.

That's how the User upload system works at that time, and in other sites like in hongfire (They used the Thanks system).

and You should know that the User Upload is as big and important as the "official" uploads. A bunch of people freaked out when the Video upload section got removed.

This is why I would suggest allowing normal users to do "official" uploads (and creating a self regulating system like E-hentai), but okay.

Then like someone said, just make it a positive thing. It'll sort of function like post count almost. A person with high rep will be almost considered an elder or a contributor to the site. The negatives are unnecessary.

Right now EA has a "Like" system, which sort of works like Facebook. Maybe this can replace the Like system?

This thread reminds me of the dipwad news media giving people ideas, "all the terrorist have to do is_________, and we're screwed. now here's a step by step guide.". if they didn't know how to do this, or hadn't thought of it, they do now. should not this matter have been handled in a less public manor?
