Proposal: Rating System for Manga
-1
Hey Folks, I've been on Fakku for approximately 3 years as a member but have visited Fakku for +5 years. As a user I log on every so often trying to find some good Doujinshi and H-Manga, but sometimes the uploads aren't to my taste, and I don't necessarily have an abundance of time on my hands to look through the past 2 weeks of Manga etc. Sometimes when I find something that I think will be good, (Granted I'm looking at the cover art, the series along w/ the author and translator) (Judging a book by its cover to be exact) but I digress. I end up finding the manga wasn't to my liking etc, and end up looking some more. I'm not alone, all too often this is the case for many of us who browse on Fakku, looking for an enjoyable h-manga to view. So I thought Fakku could institute a rating system of sorts, creating a weekly list of manga uploaded for each week and sorting them based on popularity, allowing users to find an h-manga that they'd find enjoyable.
1. Star Rating System
The use either a 1-3 or 1-5 star rating would exponentially speed up the process of finding popular manga. This rating would be strictly for a general outlook of said manga, allowing the user a more convenient means to figure whether to read it or not.
2. Count Rating System
The use of a count system would grade a manga based on its web traffic of members/users visiting that manga to better chart the popular hentai for the list of recently popular hentai and manga.
All in all, my drive behind this proposal is to help the average user to conveniently find what they are looking for, swiftly and without rigorous effort or a large expenditure of time. I just wanted to pass the idea to everyone and see what people thought about it. All comments, questions, and critiques are welcome.
The system would consist of a star rating and a count rating, & both would help create a list of recently popular hentai by week.

I don't like rating systems because they are inherently biased (especially 5 star rating systems). People who don't like a specific genre, yaoi as an example, are likely to give a poor rating simply because it doesn't fit their tastes rather than base it on the quality of the content. There are smarter ways to do ratings, and we will be rolling something out in the coming months to suggest content that aligns with you personal interests (no matter who you are).

I was just thinking about ways to make it easier for people to find popular manga. The lists of most Popular/Favorited manga are full of uploads from 3-6 years ago, some with the DMCA notice stamp on them etc.
I just thought we'd want an active weekly list/archive that would update itself based on what is current as opposed to what people Favorited 3-6 years ago.
I understand what you mean though and it makes perfect sense. Perhaps somebody really doesn't like an artist, translator, a particular genre or tag, and habitually 1 stars them. I can't argue that that wouldn't happen. I know there is a plethora of flaws with a star rating system, which is why we would use it in conjunction with the count system to balance out the overall rating and weed out the habitual down-votes/low star ratings from the genuine votes based on historical ratings from the user.
But perhaps that fail-safe isn't enough, or relies to heavily on the past of a user. Perhaps we simply make it more subjective to the user and make a recommended page based off their subscriptions, and favorites.
All in all, I just thought a general rating system would allow users and visitors alike to find an enjoyable manga with ease and possibly even explore new manga that they're not accustomed to.
Thanks for your input Jacob, just wanted to put that out there.

Sorry but it's pretty stupid. Rating something bad and "balancing" it with visits doesn't ensure anything. "Bad" works will still have visits.
I think the tags in general already cover the issue of "I never asked for this".
Rating system in general are silly.
And also it makes more content less known to people. Think about this on a visitor's point of view and not a user's point of view.
If you don't like an artist just ignore it, but don't make people who might end up liking said artist oversee him only because it doesn't suit the taste of others.
I'm more for variety because it makes people know more about artists/works.

With the users on this site, all loli and NTR works would end up with an average of 1-2 stars regardless of actual quality.

Thanks for your insightful posts! I think there is a way to have a good balance between the two systems, we're working on something I think you'll really like.

I was thinking about this recently, well not exactly. @trueyukinagato-3357829 brought up the fact that we don't really have any hard info about artists that's easily accessible. So I thought that it would good to incorporate user feedback, which would help provide exposure for artists who don't have a FAKKU! published book or aren't particularly well known.
Instead of a rating system you can allow users to "qualify" a particular work after reading it. There would be multiple options, such as "Erotic", "Cute", "Freaky", "Emotional", "Funny". You get the idea. There aren't any decidedly negative options by design, that way you can't just 1-star a work into oblivion. You can choose to abstain from voting and votes can be either single selection or multiple selection. This helps users get an idea of how many people enjoyed a particular work and how they felt about it. It also gives you a new way to query the database that's actually based on feedback. Additionally there could be a brand new artist page with aggregate data like most common tags and most common feedback qualities.
Of course this doesn't solve the problem of "stale" work still sitting at the top. But if they're timestamped you can just find a better way to rank them. It's also very limited in that you're restricted to giving feedback with only a few different options. Too many different qualities and users might not care to pick out the right one(s).
Anywho I wonder what the plans are...

Part 1 would turn into a shillfest, part 2 is way too subjective no matter the tags you're heads over heels about, and ties directly with part 1. Scanlation is a world where bandwagoning and upboating (forgive the term, it simply means "I'm voting what the others are", kinda like on youtube) happen frequently. The entire OP system in general wouldn't work though, because you have no control on what scanlators work on, the periods of drought, it's a volatile environment with too many variables.
