Torrents and why I hate them.

Ok, so I want to download some of our videos. Problem is, we nerfed the normal download links, and now we only have torrents. I LOATHE torrents. They are useless to me. I downloaded Azereus, followed all the directions for increasing download speed, including forwarding a port for it, and it only downloads at 22.3 kbps. What THE hell. I could dowload faster than that WITHOUT the torrent. Aren't torrents supposed to be faster? Anyways... what I am asking is a 2-part question:
1. Am I doing something wrong? I have the worlds WORST DSL service. That's right--Verizon.
2. Do you plan on brining back the regular download links?
Thank you.

Well, torrent is like gambling, it can either be extremely fast or not download at all depending on seeds / leeches

If you have a lot-o-seeds and still, getting slow downloads... check settings and make sure your download isn't capped, and you can handle enough connections... etc.
Torrent has always been something Minsc uses in the background, while sleeping. Download things ahead of time, some things can take days to get!

Some files that are huge (say 5 gb+) can take forever with direct, but torrent ive gotten in like 5 hours before.. it all depends lol

Yeah i loathe torrents too but I still use 'em =x sometimes you need a person that had finished downloading leave their torrent on for others to dl off >_>

I don't know. I want mah damn Immortal Sisters, and torrents seem to hate me. I am skilled in almost every internet technology... my weakness is the torrent system. >_>

I like torrents but I think we should of kept to direct DL for those who don't have/like torrents.

I hate torrent too. When I download some game where there are no seed at all so I can't download anything. I wait for week to month and I give up only 1%

There should be something on the client that tells you if everything on the network is ok. I forget what it is on Azereus though.
Seeder/Leecher ratio is also a major factor. If you're sure the files are the same from other torrents, you could add multiple trackers to one torrent.

I'm guessing because the newest releases of Bleach from the fansub group "Dattebayo" tend to download very quickly. For me, I usually download at 200kbs or higher with only 50 TCP connections.
For those with problems with torrents, I found 2 guides that might be able to help.
This is a 5 step, easy to understand guide.
5 steps to speeding torrents
This is for the more technical person who can understand it. I didn't and just followed the 5 step guide above 8)
How to Get Good Download Speeds

I am also very, very disappointed by the lack of straight download capability. I am unable to use torrents because of a firewall.

I used to love torrents, but now that Comcast is killing P2P connections I'd rather have direct downloads.

Theirs one thing that might cause all your problems.
A) The old version on azerous was awesome but when they merged with some other ppl and the entire client got re-written it turned to complete shit. For a windows based torrent client microtorrent is the ONLY way to go. Written in fully managed c++ the whole program is 110kb
B) Telus is our DSL provider and I bet money Verison is employing aggressive traffic shaping on all registered ports to relieve some of the spikes that occur with un-capped topology. Its illegal to block the private port range 65000+
I run a linux torrent server with web interface so me and my roommates all download on one machine in the closet and i have ports 60000-62000 open for torrents (remember you need tcp AND udp open) and now we download dozens of files at hundreds of kb/s and do at least 300GB traffic a month. Bleach and naruto and new postings on baka-updates are done within 5-10 min.
Microtorrent has a port checker in its config utility but I use the link to check ports for other things http://www.utorrent.com/testport.php?port=60000 just change the port form 60000 in that link to whatever you use. Remember to completely disable the windows firewall as its the most retarded and useless bit of code to date.
Download Microtorrent
NOTE TO Aust:
Using the above ports will allow you to use torrents like usual as the US government was kindly enough to leave us legally open ports.
