Webmasters!

I am currently testing out a streaming video site for all of our releases. If you join the IRC you can see it in action right now. It started off as something I was doing for fun, but now I really want to see it become a real thing.
So if you own a web server somewhere that has a 100mbps connection or greater and you want to help host some streaming videos send me an email at jacob@fakku.net.
Alternatively if you like the idea you can donate towards additional servers to host streaming content. Just send the money to jacob@fakku.net. I doubt we will be able to raise enough money (it would require at least $6,000) but it's worth a shot.
Either way, you can check it out in the IRC.

When I try to go to IRC it says, "failed to connect"
I'm pretty curious as to what's going on there.

Wouldn't the usual megaupload / megaporn links work just fine? (Like what you're doing now.) It's good enough for me.

Well I already sent you the email concerning this, so I won't bother mentioning it here..
@Above no they won't work, at least not alone, megaupload & megaporn both use anti hotlinking methods where they use a random md5 hash that expires after sometime, or after it is accesses, I think 3 times.
This effectively kills any idea of embedding, unless you were to use a variable in the embed, and then script something to grab the new link every instance a user attempts to load the video.
Which all in all would be a lot of work, and then you have to worry about them being taken down, and sooner or later megaupload would catch on...
@Above also
Mibbit sometimes tweaks out on me, so I'd advise using a different client to connect to IRC if you're still having troubles. #Fakku@irc.rizon.net

I'm just going to toss this idea out there. Have you thought about getting the video file, zipping it into split archives, and then uploading those to a sub-domain or something? I did this with my sub-domain and files I wanted to share since I hate sites like RapidShare and MegaUpload. The only potential problem I foresee with this method is the monthly bandwidth usage gettin murdered pretty fast. Hopefully though people will be smart enough to not delete the video files and keep re-downloading them though.

Ok, I like where your heart is, but how do you propose he embed multiple zip files for streaming?
Also that would mean hosting on his own servers...
The issue here is that Jacob's server isn't built for streaming 200-300mb files to (probably hundreds, maybe thousands?) of people a month, so even if you could do that, zipping it up (sure it saves some space...) wouldn't make much of a difference.

I never said to stream it. I made the suggestion as a "Just in case the streaming idea doesn't go as planned" idea. As for hosting it, I like to cheat and sign-up for a free sub-domain and upload the files to it and use the sub-domain as a download server.
As for the zipping part, WinRar along with a couple other archiver programs have a function to split files into multiple archives so that they are easily handled, like lare installs that are bigger than a gig can be segmented into smaller pieces that are about 50~200megs in size each and when you want to unzip it you just unzip the first archive of the set with all of the segments in the same folder as the first archive. I do this with most of my vids and games that I don't want on my hard drive but still want to keep.

Well that isn't what he's trying to do here to begin with, then free hosting bandwidth would be used up in a matter of a week probably.
As for the multiple parts, it does no good... other than make it annoying to download 10 parts for a single episode even if you can do it simutaniously.
Anyway, I'll donate towards a server. 6k would have the server set for a year or so, depending on what kind you buy, where you host etc, fdcservers has 1gbps for 300$/month but I believe it's burstable..not sure.

Not to rain on anybody's parade, but I wouldn't use the streaming function on this site even if it wasn't located in the IRC. I'd download it and watch it from my hard drive with no wait time while watching if the buffering pauses/fails.

This is all still up in the air. In order for it to work properly there would need to be 3-4 servers serving videos. It's possible, just expensive.

Buffering time wouldn't be bad, unless your net is slow, probably...
Also the quality is planned to be very high from what I see, and the wait time? Well playing it instantly rather than downloading it seems like less wait to me :P
Also it's possible to use something like say, VLC to play from a stream (if you know where the flv is located) but all in all I would normally download, however streaming is just very convenient.

Well I've seen other sites ask for donations and it worked for them, but they didn't stick to it so it got hard for them. But with all the popularity of this website and the thousands of people who are members or lurking I wouldn't be surprised if you did get that $6000. Hell I'd even help even though at the moment I'm not getting any income lol, you could just ask for any amount of money doesn't matter because every little bit counts. I'd prefer the quality of my videos to be high so if you can get flv videos in high quality like how youtube is doing it now as to take less space and have the dl links for avi or mkv or whatever that'd be cool.

Any of the streaming sites could get the FLV in HQ, but instead they had it lose quality during conversion @ server to save money in bandwidth/space. So basically yes, he can get HQ.

I skimmed through the Yui video, but I'll actually have a look now, brb :P
Edit: Ok, yea I think this is probably good, I'm sure it could be slightly better but, let's face it, it beats any of the other streaming sites out there that you don't have to pay for...
The subs are readable, which is what matters. I don't think anyone could complain about the quality.
Also how are you going to handle varying aspect ratios with this player?
Edit2: Haha I see yo're already switching it to php, good man :P
