How do I add mods?

I am really confused on the process of adding a mod. This will be my first PC game, and adding mods is confusing. Mods tells me to add the game in the IPA. then extract. but when i try to open the game it keeps saying i need to add an executable next to it.
What is that? Can someone give me tips on how to add them?
