I had external hdd for years that still work like out of the box.. depends on how you treat them and Manufacturer's.
I have two fantoms and a wd.
2.0 usb ones are awesome the 3.0 ones are having problems but so do all new tech.

That's the one I've stayed away from the most because of the amount of 1 star reviews when compared with other hard drives. I actually have a smaller hard drive by that company and it works fine though.
