So basically my head chef is resigning from the restaurant I work at, and everyone's planning to give him a farewell souvenir in a form of money, and asked me to contribute.
Should I? I don't see why I should contribute to be honest, he's a head chef, and he has got way more money than me, why should I? What do you guys think?

It's called courtesy. If he's been nice to all of you, and you guys are going to miss him, it's only right to give him a last gift.
However, money as a farewell souvenir... eh, you're better off making something yourself, or getting him an actual gift.

Money as a farewell thing sounds like a weak-ass cop out. I'd either just throw some money in or make/purchase something less lame.

If buying an actual gift, I dont mind. But if its money, I cant just give him 10 or 20 dollar notes. You get me?

Make him a peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
Unless he's never given you a raise, then just give him only peanut butter.

money is convenient but impersonal
some people will just spend it,
(if he is wise he will buy something from the money you people gave him, to make a memory out of it)
if you buy a gift, at least you will be remembered everytime he sees it

Buy him something decent .. like a wood carving of a small chef or a plate with an image of a big fat chef.
Stay with the theme man .... it adds comedy to the farewell gift which makes it that better.
I bought a garden looking candle for a girl as a parting gift, always gotta give em something to hold onto.
