Italy's heavy defeat against Russia a few days ago forces Gli Azzuri's top man to formulate a new tactic if Italy wants to go past the qualifying section of European Championship 2012. Their quality and quantity of possession was poor throughout the game, but what really caught the eyes of football experts are just how poor Italy's defense was. Maggio's awfyl performance on the right side was fully taken as an advantage by Andrey Arshavin and Alan Dzagoev to wreak havoc on Italy's defenses.
This defeat is viewed as one of the most embarassing moment of Italy's footballing history. Many people questions the once seemingly-impenetrable defense of Italy. Some pundits suggest that Italy should switch to 3-5-2 formation, utilizing three centre backs, two wing backs, three central midfielders and two forwards. With this formation, hopefuly the hole left by Andrea Barzagli, who missed the tournament due to injury, can be covered and at least it won't get penetrated so easily like the previous match.
Also, De Rossi has assumed the position of central defender during recent training, implying the manager's seriousness to field a 3-5-2 formation during the tournament. Not to mention that Christian Maggio and Federico Balzaretti, players in charge of Italy's side defense, is more experienced playing as wing back in their respective clubs.
