I'm not sure if my one line of advice would be categorized as jumping into someone's problem.... it's the same with my usual approach of "Hey, You need to stop smoking!", then they shrug it that I shouldn't bother, and nothing more happened.... Why would this time turn into some drama....

He's mad at me for not paying attention or rather he said I talk to people who I like more and ignore him and he's not taking that..

Well, this situation is less of a shrug off thing. People are less sensitive about stopping smoking or whatever for example like that. He's distressed about the situation, and your response comes off as a little cold. So that's probably how the drama came about. I think.
