How do you tell when something is Herp, or when something is Derp?

What important signs should you look for to tell if something is one or the other?

Actually these two words are used together rather than apart. Excluding the phrase 'When you Herp, you Derp'.
Alternate spelling of this [HarpDarp, and as used in the later example: Harp, Darp] uses the same meaning however it is debated that this spelling dictates a much more extremity of stupidity than the more widely used spelling despite 'HarpDarp' actually being introduced first. [I know this because it happened on reddit]
