Daft Punk is not techno, and they never have been. Get your genres straight.Techno is supposed to lack melody, it's supposed to sound very mechanical and un-musical. When you think of the word "techno", you should think of something like this:

I FUCKING LOVE ELECTRIC SIX
"Electro" is an archaic term which dates back to the 70's group Kraftwerk; the term was coined because they were the first truly famous band to focus largely on electronic elements; people thought that was what "electronic" music must sound like, and spent something like 10 years trying to mimic Kraftwerk's sound.
Electro died out about the mid- to late- 80's as other "electronic" sounds emerged (synthpop, post-industrial music) and Electro became a redundant term.
Take note though; "Electro" the term is archaic, redundant, but the style of music associated with it is unique, enough so that House music producers began to mimic it around the turn of the century. That music has evolved into "Electro-House", but I'm not sure whether Daft Punk belong with the label or not.
They sound similar yet distinct from most current Electro-House producers, and they've been doing their thing since 1996, at least 10 years before the term existed.
