Anyway, on the subject of hostile alien races, what is the probability of encountering one?

It varies greatly.

But I think chances are relatively large. They don't actually need to be very warlike per se, it's enough that they're alien and possibility of us doing something to them and vice versa due to sheer racial differences skyrockets.

And then, there's assumption of some that only "conqueror" species would make a contact with backward civilization like ours.

Borg Collective are our principal nemesis, a race bend on assimilation of everything and achieving "perfection".

Other enemies include Romulan Star Empire, Dominion and their client species, Breen, Gorn Hegemony to name a few.

There's also Cardassian Union that used to be our enemy.

All sci-fi arsenal. Phasers, photon torpedoes, quantum torpedoes, pulse phasers, tachyon beams, deflector shields, all the flashy toys.

I might try to make a laser phaser rifle or something (i found it a bit annoying that they only had little pistols)

There were rifles in some of the series and films (Deep Space Nine and First Contact movie) though. And phasers were supposed to be batter than lasers, at least in Trekverse, else Starfleet would keep with them.

I don't know, I like the feel of a rifle stock resting on my shoulder for some reason. I'll probably actually try to sketch this out and make some science up in it

Of course, Federation never really got to maintain much wider ground military until some time into 2380s.

Which sort of makes sense, since it was originally intended as exploration, defense and scientific agency rather then proper military, though they had to change that when Borg and Dominion appeared.

Barring Section 31 which is pretty much all negative traits of mankind rolled together to serve Federation in secret.
