I never got why people shell out major cash for audio equipment in the first place...Because these people (including me) can (and want to) hear the difference between FLAC and 320kps MP3.

inb4 Sindalf? Dunno.
I think it's just ridiculous how much cash audiophiles waste for minimal improvements in sound that most people can't even hear in double blind tests.
But that may be just me.
Edit: And the only things I ever listen to are vinyls and CDs anyway so compression is not much of an issue to me actually

It really depends on the person's priorities. I would never buy sound systems that cost more than my computer. Some people do. It's up to them to decide whats more important. I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred on sound though.

It's not like I mind good sound though. As a musician, good sound is important to me, but for me there is a point where things get a bit too expensive.
I like buying used. Best value for cash in audio IMO, as you can easily fix stuff if it ever breaks down... and you can argue about whether audio equipment actually made any improvements in the last years besides the "bigger is better" philosophy.
I don't need 5 kilowatts amps for my living room.

I understand what you mean. I can't hear the difference between Monster cables and those normal cables that cost 1/4 the price. I try to get the best value for cash when it comes to audio, so I'm not a real audiophile.
For example, I wouldn't get the Sennheiser HD800 over the HD595.
