It's glorious, but not without some drawbacks.
The map is huge, and there are countless factions, so you won't run out of land to conquest too soon. The strategic AI is actually somewhat capable, but tactics-wise, it's still the Total War standard (which means that enemies suck). The troll-General tactic is still super-effective (lure enemy front with your general, have them chase you towards your ranged units, watch as slaughter ensues when tired enemy units run into well-positioned and fresh combined-forces army.)
The game also doesn't seem to be very well optimized, though this was the same case in Empire and Shogun 2.
The new province management system is pretty neat though, as are inter-faction politics. You also get to customize your armies a lot, which is *awesome*.
Rome seems like the easiest state to start with so far. I've heard that Parthinia is a close second. Carthage starts with a lot of land, but it's very spread-out, and you'll have to work to control all provinces around you.

Kinda.
Although truth be told, strategic phase is actually quite different. For example "proper" siege battles (as in, with walls and everything) happen only in province capitals, whereas otherwise you're capturing settlements, or fighting in open fields. Building stuff is now much more spread-out, and you can technically have several same buildings in same province, depending on what you build in your cities.
Also, with some factions, internal politics are a pretty major thing, since if you're too powerful, other factions in government can try to remove you.
This is mostly relevant to Rome and Carthage, who have pretty big/distinct political factions (who also given different bonuses, depending on who you choose, in addition to national bonuses). Less so with other factions.

Oh that's actually pretty nice. Never again you'll siege a fortified random city.

Yeah. And if you control a whole province, you can make "edicts", which let you have extra benefits (like tax rate increase, or population happiness increase etc.)
Oh, and you can combine naval and land battles now.
