was at asda self services and put my change in had 5p left but only £1 coins left, didn't want to put that in as the machine would give me a lot change and i didn't want my pennies back so paid the 5p on my card

nope, banks only charge when they have to convert into different currency.
Small shops may charge you for paying by card if it below a certain amount for them to cover the cost
