I don't think Shane even knows that much. Like Mori was speaking in really simple Japanese during her debut and I understood most of it all but Shane didn't know any of it.

Also yeah I don't know any of the writing system so I guess i lose.

Yeah, Kata can suck, but as long as you remember its mostly for foreign words or to be stylish, then you can figure out the rest without knowing what all the Kata mean xD

As much as people would probably advise against this. I would rather just learn to speak Japanese and have nothing to do with the writing system. Just teach me all the words using the english alphabet
