@shane the uk doesn't have paid holidays,
it is upto the employer, if they which to pay for bank holidays.

They are classed as paid holidays though. Only retail places generally open on them and that's at reduced times.

they are classed as bank holidays, if you are on salary you will get paid, but if you are on a hourly wage, than you will not get paid for them
