hrmm, for the most part the only real characteristic that matter at first is confidence. I've been able to date girls that some would dream of because I acted like she belonged to me and was just waiting for me to take her. The other stuff matters in the long run. It also helps if you're handsome.

The best ones IMO are the Tokimemo series :D There are two for NDS (adapted from PS) and another one set to release this year ^3^

There is a whole list on wikipedia; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Otome_game but I've played a few others (Hiiro no Kakera, Duel Love, etc) and none really compare to Tokimemo >_< There was only one that I thought even remotely came close, Hoshizora no Comic Garden ( http://www.d3p.co.jp/comicgarden/ ) and tbh I only tried it out cus Simon(TTGL)'s VA plays the shota character. HAHA orz
