Mmm, depends on what game you're playing again. Not all RPG's are stereotypical like that. Some are. I know you don't have to do that in the more recent Dragon Age games.

Not really, I'm just used to games where you attack enemies head-on like that.
If that's the case, you should definitely play the games I've mentioned. They all involve a heavy amount of graceful head on offensive rushes

The basics are the actual start so you'd be starting from the actual start. C'mon! Even I knew that and the last RPG I played was FFXIII!
On a more serious note, Dr., it's hard to explain the basic for RPGs cuz each one tends to need to be approached differently.

Bastion is a nice Indie RPG.
I loved Deus Ex: Human Revolution, plus the sequel is coming out soon-ish.

Most of these are actually multi-platform, so no worries there. Yuri-Sama's giving you some pretty good suggestions, I suggest you look some of them up.
Also, if you've heard of Golden sun, you've probably heard it's good.
What about RTSs? Do you play those?

Well, most RPGs tend to fit in the adventure role. Yuri-Sama's suggestions are once again all good choices. If you only play when you can, I suggest sticking to games that take up less of your time.
