Sadly, realistic battles are not my thing.
Lock the target, pull the switch, jam the other missile and technobabble to the max.
Not my thing.
Unless, we're talking XVIII century line battles.
Or Medieval times.

Cavalry rules the field.
Until you realize that crossbow can kill a knight along with his horse, and it takes less time to train crossbowmen than archers.
Pikes are good too, though some cavalry units were trained or/and equiped to side-step the issue.
(Polish Winged Hussars had lances that were longer than Swedish pikes, allowing them to massacre Swedish army in XVI century. By XVII though, the gig was up)
Speaking of which, muskets were horrible weapons. The main reason why they managed to dominate XVIII century battlefields was because all major empires were able to produce them at an industrial scale.
When you have so many thousands of firearms shooting some must hit.

As usual, I'll go with mercenaries, such as Swiss pikemen, German Landsknechts and Italian Condottieris. But for the ranged warfare, I'll go with Arquebusiers protected by Polish Hussars.
Archers need lot's of time to train to hit something, but if you're talking about crossbows, the Chinese made the innovation of semi-automatic mechanisms and oh, the infamous gunpowder used against the invading Mongol hordes.
Yes, gunpowder, you can't fight with wet gunpowder.
Not until the advent of Full Metal Jackets in mid-19th century.
Ummmm...how about the crusader era? Or the times of Feudal Japan? I love Samurais.
But my expertise is largely based from American Civil War- onwards.

I remember that Byzantines had troops that used that Fire of theirs, as a primitive flamethrower unit. They weren't terribly efficient (they used nafta which burned slowly and had a very short reach), but the psychological effect was there.
I don't know as much on this, but European heavily armored troops were rather effective in smashing at Arabian mobs.
The problem was that their heavy armor was horrible for desert climates. Arabians could move faster, and tire out less. Not to mention the fact that a lot of European commanders were just arrogant assholes.

arrogant assholes. Blame the pope and his bureaucracy. Arabs got heavy cavalry too, such as cataphracts draped in scale armour. Ah, the Greek Fire, + hundreds of Byzantine creations. How about World War I sire?

It wasn't just the pope, but the whole misuse of European feudal system, and the fact that skilled people were often swept under the rug because their lack of "proper pedigree".
Unless of course, they were scheming bastards.
Not much on WWI here I'm afraid.
Other than German machineguns were better than English, and the initial dogfights were conducted by pilots shooting between each other from pistols.
The idea to mount machineguns came later, and it was quite problematic...after all, if you just fired, you would pepper the rotary wings.
First tanks were also notoriously faulty.

Not until the dawn of the synchronizer gear created by the Dutch Industrialist Anthony Fokker mounted on the Fokker Eindecker.
And the horrible conditions of trench warfare. Remember the foolishness of getting No Man's Land inch by inch. Another thing is chemical warfare, especially the Mustard Gas used by the Germans to great effect in some parts of the war. But not until the defeat of Russia because of the Russian Revolution and the entry of America into the great war did made significant progress in the outcome of the war.
And another thing that I love is trench warfare, gotta love the hand-to-hand fights when trench raiders raid them in the middle of the night. It's a bloody mess especially when Huns raid the trenches with trench clubs, revolvers, spades and submachineguns (MP-18)

Which was the only thing that saved Allies ass.
Otherwise, Ludendorff's offensive would roll all the way to the Paris, at which point, the war for Allies would be over.
And America wouldn't have the chance to butt in.

Such was the day for our regiment,
Dread the revenge we will take.
Dearly we paid for the blunder
A drawing-room General’s mistake.
Why weren’t we told of the trenches?
Why weren’t we told of the wire?
Why were we marched up in column,
May Tommy Atkins enquire…

Modern warfare sucks.....But we got nothin to do about it. War is essential to us humans.
