Getting something off my chest

I think the rep sytem is used way to seriously.
Frankly, if I think one user has contributed greatly to the community, I'll +rep them. If I see somebody breaking the rules, I'll -rep them.
Of course a system like this would lead to inappropriate use one day, but all the dramu wouldn't have been here if you all didn't take it too seriously. =P
I could've had a +3 rep if it weren't for some people that somehow can't stand me, but do I look like I care? :3

The concept underlying reputation is that it's something that users can give and take away at their discretion, +rep for good respectful things and -rep for disrespectful things. It implies a heavy psychological effect as humans as a whole tend to seek appreciation, respect, and admiration from others to make up for our insecurities and doubts. Rep has to be earned for it to truly have value. Most people who get +/- repped usually deserve it, and because they deserve it they value it that much more.
I don't doubt for a single moment that people do care about rep. People who truly don't care don't use rep or complain about it. Hell, I care about rep, but not as I used too since I've been here for so long and passed the 50+rep threshold. 3-digit rep is a far off goal that I'll work it off in due time - no sweat.

What if that person doesn't know that he's breaking the rules? It isn't fair to -rep someone because of not knowing something. You should explain to him how it's done instead.
Personally, I don't remember ever having -repped someone for something that offended me (or something along the lines of that).

Its good that you had the courtesy to admit it, I don't really see any reason to hold it against you. Some people abuse it way worse then you do.
For me I'd rarely neg rep someone, I don't see how it contributes anything if it isn't stated why they've been given it. I tend to +rep others for making valuable posts.

I know what you're getting at. Hell I ended up becoming a hypocrite due to my own weaknesses. But I feel as though that simply blaming our faults on human nature and just leaving it at that is a failing within itself.
I don't want to discuss the nature of my own hypocracy, but I will say that I've come to accept that I've done something I shouldn't have and learned from the experience and will strive to improve and grow from that experience, and I think everyone else should try and do the same.
Also, why'd you put this in IB, this seems a lot more serious for a place like this
