I find it to be pointless, it's not like he listens either way.
I find the best response in those situations is no response at all, simply let his reply slide by and leave it there as a testament to his stupidity. Let others laugh and call him out, makes the humiliation that much better.
I don't like doing that, I want the person to know that I find no reason to argument any further, wether he accepts that or not is up to him, to me it's all the same.
Your silence would be the same as letting them know you're not willing to continue the argument. Responding as you did just makes it seem like you're childishly going for the last word, especially with the way you ended the reply.
