3DS region-free for everyone! (Latest firmware, no hardware)

What should I try (first)?

Already got Project Mirai 2, thinking I might try Senran Kagura, any ideas for more obscure (and preferably relatively playable with no knowledge of Japanese) games?

shin megami tensei games (glorious nippon edition)

also all the games you already own in english.

also, fe:a. loz:oot3ds, and the pokemon franchise.

yes I know I have shit taste in games... because I play literally anything.

I imagine the SMT games are rather text-heavy and somewhat story-centric, so unless they're Japanese re-releases with a lot of extra content, or multiple language options (like Bravely Default) I'll probably just stick to the english versions. Also, there're actually undub patches for all the 3DS SMT games except Soul Hackers, so I'll probably just try those :D

Already have FE:A, only advantage I see with the jp one is no streetpass glitch (I think).

I'm probably going to get jp Alpha Sapphire for all those Japan exclusive events.

I'm thinking mostly Japan-exclusive games though, or ones where the Japanese version is superior.

if you can't speak the moonrunes I would avoid SMT:IV like the plague. Oddly enough the gameplay is easy enough to figure out without knowing japanese, but its best to make decisions in that game based on what certain characters do.

as for obscure games? Fantasy Zone 1 and 2 [they aren't out in the us yet so there you go]

Also project meeeh? eh Kagura is better

Haven't played a 3DS is ages, and the only title that I regret not having played is Beyond the Labyrinth.

I don't think Capcom's quite done yet with the Monster Hunter series so yeah, maybe you'll have that to look forward to (I think I saw 4G announced in the West recently)

EX Troopers is a third person shooter game for the ps3 and 3ds, belongs to the Lost Planet series. Never got localized.

Yeah, I just realised that this comes off as a bit of a brag topic, didn't mean it to. Just a sec, lemme fix it.


And yeah, wanting to mess with it is a decent part of it, also region-free, ROM hacking (model and texture swaps, text editing, fan translations, undubs, and hopefully eventually Smash 4 minus) and I'd be lying if I said that this:

First, no matter what, your 3DS's firmware can't be any higher than 9.2 or else you can't do anything at all. You can check your firmware in the 3DS's system settings

As of now, the only non-way-overly-complicated-and-risky way to do it is with a flashcard, although the new 9.2 exploit is available for free and can be run even without one.

However the flashcard company that developed it (Gateway 3DS) sort of DRM-locked it so that most of the features aren't available without the card, so all you can do without it is:

backup and restore your firmware (but you can't restore if you update it to 9.4),
backup cartridge games,
backup and restore saves,
and perform a risky firmware downgrade operation (Although through the FW downgrade it is possible to play some games, but note when I say risky I mean that there's a certain risk of completely bricking your 3DS).

It is possible that eventually someone will reverse-engineer this exploit so that it can be used without the card, but that probably won't happen for quite a long time.

Eeh, I'll probably just go with the undubs (hack patches that swap out the english audio for the Japanese)for SMT.

I'll check out Fantasy Zone, thanks for the suggestion :)

I'm a bit of a Vocaloid fan, so I'm actually prety excited for Project Mirai, but I'll probably also be giving Kagura a go.

So basically it's a card loader that flashes your ofw to cfw and allows you to play backup copies of games like pspcfw and isos/cso/rom.

Not quite. While there is a (leaked very buggy version of a) cfw for fw 4.5, the Gateway exploits are only temporary, I believe they leave your SysNand (firmware) mostly untouched, and need to be re-launched every boot.

There is an interesting thing they developed called EmuNand, that creates a firmware copy on a special partition on the SD card, which the Gateway card then emulates, but it's basically just a more easily manipulated ofw that acts as a sort of safety net. It can safely be updated so that you can access the Eshop though.

You can however use the new exploit, even without the card, to downgrade your >4.5 ofw to the more exploitable 4.5, and from there you can use a different exploit (for which you currently need a DS flashcard, like R4 or supercard DSTWO) to install the buggy cfw I mentioned earlier, however it has several limitations due to being on older firmware.

Actually now that I think about it there is another 4.5 cfw, one that was properly released, but I don't know much about it or what it can do. Edit: It seems it's known as "the ntr cfw" XD


tl;dr No, it basically temporarily loads some custom code that lets you bypass a few locks (eg. playing and installing backups and having region free.)

The 3ds hacking scene isn't nearly as unlimited as I've heard the psp scene is, although if your firmware is 9.2 or lower there are several interesting things you can do

Apparently, now you can! Someone just released a region-free loader that works on firmware 9.4 (the latest one atm I'm fairly certain). You can find more about it here: https://gbatemp.net/threads/release-regionthree-region-free-loader-for-3ds-2ds-xl-from-9-0-9-4-sky3ds-users-regionfree.378975/
