Good read. Since you mentioned the concept of watching in the past here's a thought: two different people look at each other through two different telescopes placed on two remote planets. If they start using sign language would they be able to have a dialog? And could they both be dead by the time the dialog finishes? (lol)

Thats identical to writing letters. You send the letter and have no idea how long it takes to reach its destination. The receiver may be dead by the time the letter arrives too. When the letter is received it will describe how the writer was feeling in the past. The writer could also be dead when the letter arrives.
