Kino is actually the name of the traveler that visited a country with a talking motorcycle,Hermes. He stayed over a family where they had a young daughter whose 10th birthday was approaching soon. Kino told this young girl about the world and she was greatly interested. The only problem is every kid in that country goes through a brain rewiring at age 10 so that they become useful citizens. That young girl obviously rejected it when the time came, and those who go against this brain rewiring is allowed to kill their child.

Kino saves the girl by taking a knife for her but is killed. She escapes by riding Hermes out of the country.By this time the girl assumes the name Kino and so starts her journey in the anime.Before the anime though,She went to learn under master,a gunsmith.She had long hair then and was confused who kino is due to guilt.She eventually left master and visited the real kino's mother to say sorry of sorts. Kino had to kill the mother since the mother went insane and her blood stained her hair.Kino eventually cut it off and there you get the present day kino.

Kino is an exceptional gunslinger.She killed 3 people at one go
