i dnt listen 2 rockThen what do you listen to The CRAP that people call music when in reality it's someone speaking with some computer generated beat in the background?
What CRAP would that be? That's basically the same thing anyone who hates on rap says. The question I have to ask you is, have you ever actually tried to give rap a chance? Its ridiculous to make such a generalization about such a diverse genre of music. Its kind of like saying all metal is bullshit because there's nothing artistic about someone screaming to music.
I've listened to Rap. Old rap was good. I actually liked it.
However, nowadays? Good rap is pushed aside for the more popular, and often mistaken for mainstream, Ghetto Rap.
I hate Ghetto Rap.

Amen. My brother and I would jam to that for hours, and we were the whitest kids on the block lol.
You should look up this guy calling himself MC Nachbar. He only has like 6 songs but all of them are the shit. His true identity is Virt, a song composer for console games.

I use to listen to rap and I will give it one thing and one thing only. Everything in the early days of Hip Hop i alright, anything that has been done as of the last 10 years or so is just pure shit. As for what you are talking about where people scram into the mic it is Screamo. Metal is a heavy Giutar Rift with a heavy bassline. and most of the time, people inging out coherent words not spitting out one word after another as fast a they can. Try listening to some Nightwish and 69 eyes.

That's why I said its an unfair generalization, although not in those words. While screamo could be included in the music that contributes to the "screaming" generalization, it mostly due to the excessive use of death growls and other types of "extreme vocalization." I'm not totally opposed to it, when used in moderation I don't mind, but I prefer actual singing so when its all death growls, screaming, and shit like that I find it extremely irritating.
Getting back to rap, I'll partially agree with you about the stuff from the past 10 years, but you really can't lump it all together like that. I mean there's some great music that's been released in that timespan.

Take Alexisonfire, for example.
The actual music they do is awesome, although the screaming dude is absolutely horrid.

In a way, there has been a decent amount of quality rap released over the last 10 years, stuff with either good artistic merit, a message or point, or both.
Unfortunately the VAST majority of decent rap is by underground artists that NEVER get air play on radio or MTV. Occasionally a decent rap song will air on MTV etc. but it's mostly filled with songs about partying, sex, or people jerking themselves off about how badass and/or rich they are. And since that almost all is most people that aren't already fans of the genre's are exposed to, that is how they percieve all rap.
BTW, I say rap, but for the good stuff I'm referring to is actually hip-hop. Hip-hop is more of a lifestyle than just rap, most rappers just do it for the money, and a lot of them are just greedy bitches trying to get paid. Hip-hoppers are a totally different crowd, where most of their "rap" (actually often reffered to as MC'ing within the community, in order to differentiate it) actually has a message and meaning to it. Hip hop is the whole thing, including stuff like actually DJ'ing and scratching, beat boxing, emcee'ing, droppin science, graffiti, b-boyin', and other parts of the whole experience other than yelling obscenities and talking about getting paid or getting bitches into a mic.
If you're curious to find out more, look around online about the differences between hip-hop and rap, it's pretty interesting and enlightening stuff.

as any new genre of music begins there is always someone to push it further and make it better, since sooo few artists play said music it's obviously going to have better roots; when that genre becomes popular... well let's just say the amount of artists increase with the amount of fans, and they can't all be good at what they do.
I like songs from every genre; EVERY GENRE.

as long as it sounds good, genre is not important.
stop generalizing genres.
i'd even listen to some mongolian folk music if it does sounds good.

I get what you mean and I do tend to like more hip-hop than rap. There is some of that mainstream, "look at me I'm rich" rap or the shit about fucking, partying, cars, and shit like that I actually do like. I'm pretty open-minded about music and I'll be willing to give anything a shot, but I'm not the type of person who regularly searches for new music to listen to. I only download or buy something if I hear something that I really like or if I'm checking out some other material from artists I like. That's one of the reasons why I don't generalize when it comes to music. I stopped watching music television, whether its MTV or the other channels, a long time ago. Most of my music collection spans from the 60s to around 2001.

I was just pointing out to those that didn't know that rap is just a PART of hip hop.
Think of it this way. Hip hop is like Asian martial arts, where there is meaning, purpose, art and spirit to the fighting. What is now know is rap is more like MMA fighting, where it's all about kicking people's ass and being the best. That's probably the best analogy I can think of. Rap is still a portion of hip-hop, but when it is surrounded by the rest of the culture and social consciousness that is key to the community it tends to take on a lot more artistic and meaningful purpose. Take the culture out of it, and it just becomes a bunch of bangers and slangers and pimps talking about how much they love money, hoes, and acting tough.
That said, I agree, there is some of that music that can be fun on occassion, whether it's just to dance to a good beat, or because some of it is just fun or funny (ala Luda, who is funny as hell to me). Just wanted to let those that may not have been exposed to anything outside of mainstream rap that not everyone that rhymes into a mic is all about what you see the bitches on MTV being about.
BTW, there are a few well-known current artists that could be considered hip-hop, or close to it due to at least sometimes being more than just rappers. Guys like Common, NAS, Kanye, and a few others of the current crop about about as close as you can get to true hip-hop of those that get wide-spread airplay.

I like hip-hop culture since a genre I like stems from it (NerdCore) though I dislike the modern day rappers that seem to worship money and material. Like the ones on MTV cribs disgusted me. "I've got 15 cars, got, a theatre in my house, etc, etc". They take a culture and piss all over it. From what I know about the Hip hop culture was all about meaning. They would talk about their struggles, their failures and their hardships but also about the success and dreams. Building a life from nothing and reaching the top the classic "Rags to Riches". Rappers nowadays come from better surroundings and try to say their lives were hard like Kanye.
I think rap and Hip-Hop are two sides to the same coin. Rap is materialistic, shallow and all about money and fame. Hip-Hop is all about the music, expression, art and the lifestyle.

There are a lot of rappers that came from really rough beginnings. Its not just rappers from places like Oakland, Detroit, Baltimore, Newark, Buffalo, D.C., Philly, Atlanta, and all the other cities with really high crime rates and poverty levels. A lot of smaller cities and towns that might not show on the radar are complete pieces of shit. A lot of rappers who go over the top when they make it do so because they never had that type of shit and they've worked hard to get where they are, regardless of whether they are about the music or not. They're just enjoying the shit they have while they can. Even so, there are a lot of materialistic rappers who, despite the fame, are still incredibly passionate about music. A lot of times, they are releasing really humble tracks, but they don't get played on TV or the radio because its easier to sell their image if they release less emotional tracks.

Uhhhhh yeah seriously lacking a topic, but I like where it's going. As far as metal goes It's not all heavy riffs and basslines with some dude screaming into a mic. Try checking out some Tool or Rage. Granted Rage does have a bit of screaming in it, it's got a bit of a hip-hop/funk twist. Tool tends to be rather melodic for metal, and Maynard James Keenan has a hell of a voice. Personally I have rather eclectic tastes in music. With the exception of rap... just don't dig it. Love ragea though.

My usual preference in metal is the Faster, Heavier, Louder the better. That or if the scene of a "300" style epic battle comes to your mind when it plays.
My opinion on Artists in general is you are either about the music or the money and your music will tell people which one.
