Internet Gaming terms for Dummies! A guide for the rest of u

Ok, since barely half of the people I talk to offline understand me, I decided to throw up a topic about various terms used in generic online gaming. Enjoy.

1. Pwn - (v) - To own. To massively defeat.
Pwnage - (n) - Where something got pwnd.
Pwnd - (v/pt) - The past-tense of pwn.
Pwn was created when someone tried to type "Owned," and accidentally hit a "P" instead of an "O." Someone must have thought this was cool, and used it in regular chat. Eventually, it caught on, and Pwn was born.
2. Noob - (n) - One who lacks skill or decent equips.
Nub - (n) - SEE -> Noob. A Rank lower than Noob.
Newb - (n) - One who is new to something. Different from Noob.
Just various contortions of the word newbie. This word is more derogatory, however.
3. Hax - (n) - Unexplainable luck, or success. Different from Hacks.
Hacker - (n) - One who uses hacks during gameplay. Generally looked down upon by the community.
Hacks - (n) - 3rd party programs used to obtain an unfair advantage during gameplay.
4. Elitist - (n) - One who believes that because of his status, he is better than another player.
Elite - (adj) - Having a high level, rank, or mass quantities of currency or items. The direct opposite of Noob.

Origin of 'pwn' is from when a Warcraft II map developer made a typo while making the bot. This phrase could have originated in tons of places, who knows where it actually came from, or the first person to ever use it was a substitute for 'own'.
It most likely started as a typo- and people started making fun of it, and it caught on. That's just a guess, though.

Aye. Pwn could have just as easily derived from anywhere, really. That is just the explanation I heard. Like how Fathers tell sons tall tales when they are young? NO. We tell stories about epic win and uber pwnage.

I like this forum but..... isn't it a bit copying mine? :'(I think it certainly is. And as such, my comment for this is the same:

Ahh, I despise that sort of language. Just like the other internet shorthand, it never ceases to annoy me for some odd reason. But thank you for posting this, at least now I'll be able to read people's gibberish with ease.
