From my personal horror movie watching, I find that most of them rely on taboo subjects, and the human psyche more than American films. Audition is one of my favorites, since it seems like an obvious failing circumstance in the plot but it could've gone either way.
A good comparison of this is The Ring vs. Ringu. I've watched both and the American adapt has a shitton of symbols and foreseeing items in the film that guide the viewer along as Naomi Watts investigates the "mystery of Samara". Ringu was much more mellow and "quiet". It wasn't too graphic filled and was more like a horror story you'd just tell someone.
But why compare it myself when I found this handy youtube video with actual evidence!

There are only a few horror movies I like. Maybe the only japanese horror movie I like is "Ichi The Killer". That right there was an awesome mindfuck.
I've watched both versions of The Ring. Personally, I like the english one better. The japanese version really didn't appeal to me.
I'd like to hear some suggestions on a jap horror movie for me to watch.
Old Boy is korean, not japanese.

old boy was written by a Japanese man Nobuaki Minegishi who did the manga so at least the story is Japanese

While it is a rather dark movie, i'm not sure it fully counts as "horror." or at least what most people think of when they hear horror movie.

I think the reason I like Japanese horror is because I think they are funny, because I'm into dark/black humour. Besides, the Japanese version ends up being better in my very fucking honest opinion.

I don't, I regard horror movies in general as trash, Japanese or not.
The only remotely interesting horror movie is Hardware. It has Lemmy.
