Once Skype is introduced, any Forum's site chat dies slowly or instantly.Nay, I know of plenty of communities that use a combination of all three. Personally IRC is the way to go if you're looking for a messaging service and mumble for VOIP. You can't beat the features that IRC offers, bots and scripts are a wonderful thing; Mumble is great because voice data is transmitted over a secure network. Skype is good if you have a small amount of people, 2 - 20, that you regularly communicate with, but, unlike mumble, data is transmitted over an unsecured network.

Two things:
1. Vent and teamspeak > mumblé
2. Why do you care if it's an unsecure network? It's not like you're going to be saying your bank details over it, or where you live.

1. Ventrilo & Teamspeak are not free, though I agree they're the better choice if you feel like paying for them.
2. Don't hold everyone else to your standards, there are many people who exchange private information over Skype regularly, the majority of people who use Skype use it to communicate with their family, co-workers and real-world friends.

Other people paying for your servers is best. Alternatively, hijack another server
2. Das true. Still, doesn't phase me
