It was a joke, i.e. the fact that is paid to preach bullshit and people lap it up induces feelings, in sensible people, of the pointlessness of existence (something often attributed to nihilism, don't start arguing about it here). 1977 is when he got his first radio show.

I was hardly suggesting that he literally preaches nihilism, he's a fucking Mormon, but that last paragraph wouldn't quite have had the same impact.
