To those who use the +/- system like mine, you don't add points that are already there. If I subract -1 since your avatar isn't a .gif, you'd be left with 9/10. That other nine points are not "+9" points, it's as is. My scoring method is like a grading a test/quiz. You only get marked off for what you did wrong, and get extra credit through the "+#".
