Go read some Stephen King, lots of gold right there. If you're into fantasy I'd suggest The Wheel of Time series, 14 books that would keep you occupied for a while.
Other than that, Eric van Lustbader's books are pretty good, and personally I'm quite the fan of Jeffrey Eugenides, 'though he mostly writes short stories.
