Speed scans vs quality scans

Do you care, assuming the scan is properly leveled and the translation is fluent and correct, about redraws and typesetting?

The alternatives to choice number 2 are a mix of what cgrascal and tllp do, which is much, much quicker and -for many- a lot more effective.

A good translation and editing job doesn't take appreciably longer than a terrible one, if someone knows what they're doing.

Of course, if someone is lazy and never bothers to learn to translate or edit properly, then they're stuck doing a bad job. And it probably takes them longer than it takes a good translator or a good editor.

Why does that apply to levelling and not to other aspects of editing or translating?

Because proper leveling takes seconds, proper redrawing can take hours for a psd and weeks for the whole thing depending on how fond the artist is of text-on-art, the spots he chose, the moans he uses, the patterns he likes, no matter the means you have or the skills you possess. To an editor experienced with hentai redraws working with non-h is child's play, the only thing he needs to worry about is scans are often much, much dirtier, but heavy filtering is common, something not really tolerated in hentai. To say it takes a little bit more than taking shortcuts is simply preposterous. My question is if it's worthy, and looking at some groups, their speed and the general consensus, I think it's not. I wasn't even questioning whether the translation should be good or not, the translation should always be good, because it's what matters the most. It doesn't seem like many people come around here though, so maybe I'll ask someone to make a front page poll or something.

It really depends on the book.

If the page requires major redraws, you're right, it's usually not worth it. I'm not going to claim that anyone should spend hours redrawing, because that's just silly. It si fun sometimes, but it shouldn't be considered a requirement.

However, a very good result can usually be had by using clever text placement, choosing an appropriate font and abusing content aware. You're talking maybe five minutes to just place the text and do nothing versus ten to place it and fiddle with the background a bit. No artistic talent or anything required, just a decent eye for what looks OK.

The amount of books that actually require major redraws is low. Most books require none or only in a couple of spots. As such, I assumed that the differences you were talking about in editing quality were more about the typesetting, which is a major problem for some editors. Typesetting badly takes the same amount of time as typesetting well, and that's more what I was referring to.

Some people work faster than others, other editors are simply more talented than others.

Here's a RAW image vs a REDRAWN image, I simply opened up a PSD that was a WIP and hid the text.
Most editors will simply drop the text there, then redraw AROUND it to hide what is necessary.

To give you an idea of the kind of editors that I will actually accept, take a peek at our editing test HERE and maybe play around with the tests yourself to see what kind of results you get. Every editor is required to be able to do a minimum of 2 advanced, and a master grade test image to be considered for acceptance. That does not include the interview phase, the lengthy psuedo-resume I ask for, or the ID check to make sure editors are of age to work on this kind of material.

Some people are fine with what the standards are in the H-scene, I want to raise those standards.

Assuming basic ratio of speed/quality is 50/50, I prefer 60/40. Quality is never bad, but I'm a fast reader and even if there is any mistakes, as long as they aren't illegible, my mind doesn't even notice. So I'm happy getting more at slightly less quality.

Hmmm, I think this just depends for me.

I am more prone to disliking a shitty translation (unless it's so bad it's just hilarious) versus a shitty scan quality.

I don't mind if a person is learning to translate and makes some mistakes, but I hate when I see such disjointed sentence structure and terrible grammatical errors (we're not talking about its not having an apostrophe) that I'm actually distracted from the content. I've stopped reading some hentai/manga just because the translation was shit.

To me if a translation is shit it should just stay as a raw since I do enjoy those personally even if I cannot understand what is going on. I love art just as much as a good story.

When it comes to the scans as long as I can see what's going on and the pages are blurred or cut off to the point that I'm missing half of the action I'm okay with it.

Months ago I was on the fence, the way things are now I think I would go with speedscans all the way. I would being I will.

There's Japanese text underneath, from the little I can see since he never leaked the raw my guess is something like ずっと、ずっと... (Zutto, Zutto…, Forever and Ever...).

He didn't redraw the shading on her thigh, nor clone the pattern on the leg, he simply squirted white to cover the text and typeset over it, and he did the same with all the rest of the floating text on the page. If you say nothing turned you off, you just proved my point.

After being in the scanlation scene for about a year I cringe every time I see a badly edit doujin/manga series. Not removing the Japanese text is really lazy and redrawing around the text is more of a hassle than just redrawing the whole thing.

Though I say this, I have no idea how to do color cleans.

As fast as it can be done without leaving a significant impact on quality. Everyone makes mistakes, and the faster the job is the more likely mistakes will fly under the radar. If I notice a drop in quality then I'm inclined to wait for a better release.

If we're talking about officially localized work then quality takes the absolute highest priority. In this case it's best that the work does the author justice without sacrifice.

I'm gonna give you another concrete example. Look at this, the guy did not care for one single moan, so much that he even omitted actual text that was handwritten, he just assumed it was a moan and skipped it (Panel 2, he goes "Se— Sen— Pa— (trying to say Senpai). Same at the bottom ("Soko" (that place/spot/etc.)). There are people who clean all the text, redraw where the balloons break the border (pain in the arse) and typeset following the raw. He just used one font, ignored moans, covered floating text with english text, and moved on. I see no complaints, so that means that approach is fine.

Quality over speed for me, I like to enjoy what I read.
