if you don't mind watching an anime that is still airing I would recommend

Gokukoku no brynhildr -compared to the anime we watched before, this anime has a lot of the serious elements with very little of the stuff you didn't like

M3: Sono Kuroki Hagane - this one is a bit darker, but if you are mentioning watching AoT then this one should be fine, only a few episodes are out but it's getting pretty good so far

Golden time - a finished airing anime, this is a slice of life anime that I Highly recommend without the whole "my life is hard" or "everything is cute or fun" (does involve romance though

others you may or may not of seen that I highly recommend based off of what I think you may like:

Guilty Crown
Steins gate - starts off a bit slow but is amazing
Shiki
Another
Dusk maiden of Amnesia

Here I go with the same problem, I don´t know what to watch first or what to start first. It all does sound interesting.

I vouch for all of those except for Shiki - and A Golden Time is good
