I am Ukrainian on my fathers side.
My maternal grandfather was English. My grandmother was French.
In 1978 a company in France was looking for an agent.
My grandmother's 3d or 4th husband was retired military and worked for them.
By some strange magic only the French understand, I was hired as their agent.
I spent about 4 months a year in France for 3.5 years and picked up enough French to conduct our business, eat, travel, etc. and impress my friends. I am not. nor was I ever, nor will I ever be what you would consider fluent.The best you could say was that I was conversant. But I can still read, write and speak a little. Mostly a case of "use it or lose it"
