We were teached about programming but we actually studies and gained more knowledge when we played with code.
BUt then again, People are diffrent.
Some learn by books, some prefer to get theyr hands dirty.

Most things gathered from books need application. Even just useless trivia, in games, etc.
Even if one learns better through doing it, they still need to see it or have some idea of what they are doing from somewhere. And books can be that somewhere.
