From memory, the excrement was also partly nutrients that weren't ingested. So, it's not entirely waste as such. Just, mostly.
Also depends on what type of excrement, as some forms are toxins (dem runs) and some are full of them.

Can't remember how it goes, but there is some nutrients in them. Otherwise it wouldn't be great for fertiliser (of which is mostly animals, but ours isn't that much different in many cases, bar us eating meat)
