if the search didnt come up with anything but the name is clearly there then you wrote the name incorrectly or the list has the typo... It happens but it does mean she is taken. It is fairly frustrating to watch 2-3 users a week try and claim girls who have been taken for a long time.

Indeed, a tip to find out if the character is taken: ctrl+f and check the name of the character, in different spellings if you know of any (for example, names spelled 'ou', like 'Kyouko' is sometimes spelled 'Kyôko' instead.
Also, check the name of the anime/manga/game/w/e she is from. If there is more characters than her taken from that show, use the next button until you've seen all the chars taken from the show.
Seldom there is a typo in both the name of the character as well as in the name of the show, so if you can't find the char you want to claim after trying all this, you can probably go ahead and try to claim her.
