Well post count may be used as requirements for various things like titles or other future features.
I got tired of 3 word post quite a while ago as well, even when I did post in it I kinda disliked it at the same time, dunno why. I certainly don't mind it being closed until it can be set up so it doesn't contribute to post counts or being closed indefinitely for that matter.

If it gets unlocked, so be it. But I think most new users use post count almost as a way of estimating a users usefulness. REP is also a good meter, but it's not always used where deserved. Especially when disgruntled users de-rep when they are loosing in an argument, or don't like how a person thinks.
