Words that sound weird to you.

I start wondering any word if I start thinking about them too much; often as to how they evolved. Is it Germanic? Latin? A mix? Or simply onomatopoeic?


For example, "Start" and "Finish" do sound rather appropriate for their meanings- but is it their actual phonetics, or is it simply learned association on a subconscious level?

After all, "Finish" would make sense even without sounding appropriate, because its a corrupted transliteration of the Old French "Feniss/Fenir" - itself taken from the Latin "Finis/Finire" (which, funnily enough, is now what the Modern French use).

But if we go even deeper- we can begin to muse as to why the Latin developed the word as is. But we usually refrain from delving past that level- if only for lack of records.
