I have dated a girl with quite a few, I'm not sure what I could give you in terms of tips, try going to places with a different scene than you're probably used to. Agreed, they're words, I don't see many people with the english word for Harmony on their arm. I think symbols are fine though, no matter the culture as long as you appreciate the meaning.
