I'd say it's alright, depending on the character, a lot of things for me depend on the character. I enjoy a person who isn't always there to wake you up or support you because normal people wouldn't bother, unless are in a strong relationship.

For example if I had a girl that was a childhood friend, she would be most concerned with either herself or her other friends. People grow up and move on after all. at least logically after all. Also in anime Childhood friends tend to always be near the house or in the house with the other friend. A parent doesn't really want a guest 24/7 also now Japan may be different, but people enjoy privacy I'd think.

Not sure but I'd agree it's less common. For example if we use the yandere CD's there are about five yandere sisters in it, while there is a possible two childhood friend yanderes and about six seemingly unrelated yanderes to the protagonist.
