Still, it would usually stop working due to the normal wear and tear caused by water and the moving parts. Not using it keeps it longer in a better condition, if useless.

Most manufacturers make their goods to have limited lifetime, so it breaks and you go buy another one other wise if it didn't break you wouldn't buy another and then they don't get your money (planned obsolescence)
