Stumbled upon this, and i think its pretty entertaining.
Also, if that Nolanverse bane cosplayer wanted to break my body and my spirit, i'm not sure i would put up much of a fight.Just sayin

I would say the main thing is nobody would purposely call themselves a geek in front of people unless they're harboring for attention or someone confronted them about their obsession for something.
That's probably the main way to tell if someone actually is like that.
It's like people who call themselves otaku. If you call yourself an otaku, chances are you are just a weeaboo.

They are both pathetic, so who cares.
Also, nerds/geeks/whateveryoulabelthatshitas is, in my experience, probably one of the most elitist groups of people you'll come across, ever.

Going to a convention like that is the best feeling ever, but the community has a lot of hate towards pretty much everyone. Also the best way to identify a "fake geek" : look for the 'GEEK' T-shirt.

It really depends on your preferences. An otaku in Japan is someone who is really obsessed or engrossed in a hobby. It doesn't necessarily have to be anime or manga it could be guns or even fitness, a good example of this is the television series, Densha Otoko.
Should geeks berate fans who are not as engrossed as they are? I would have to say no. If anything, the more the merrier. In the breakroom the most prevalent topic is sports and gossip, it would be refreshing to talk about the latest anime episode for once.

This, if you label yourself to get attention you are doing it for the wrong reasons.

I remember when the fake geek thing wasn't a gender thing and people didn't make idiotic strawman comics about it.
Also as chlor said, a lot of people are elitist when it comes down to these things. Best thing to do is just ignore them if you're not that invested in the whole "scene".

Cosplay scenesters are shitty human beings. Unless you're actually looking for dates/friends/circlejerkers, it shouldn't matter how much you've invested a fandom when you're cosplaying, especially if the person has a bodytype that isn't the natural product of lazing around.
If you're bringing hype anywhere via cosplay, you're welcome. Doesn't matter if you're not some sort of die hard fan or not. This scenester attitude comes from this implied thought that if you wear something, you must be wasting your entire existence and paycheck sucking the metaphoric dick of the product.
Besides, it's an awful exercise in futility. "I waste X amount of Y because I want to prove that I like this." So you mean I have to become an abject loser like you to appreciate something.

This is the same for geek and nerd, in most cases.
Regardless, I don't consider myself anything other than a gamer... At most, maybe I'm a bit nerdy, but fucked if I care.
