A way to solve it all. Would you?

If there were a device that took away all your feelings of pain and suffering and anything negative at all would you use it and why? (the device doesn't remove the things that cause pain and suffering from the world it just makes it so they don't trigger negative responses in the people that use the device.)
I personally would not use the device. I think that pain is a horrible thing to go through. But if you don't go through it then you will be worse off then if you went through the pain and came out of it.

I've read Brave New World and that's enough for me to say no to this (although the thing [drug] they used in the book made you get away from your individuality altogether). Life wouldn't be life to me without the negative stuff hitting me left and right. You oughta man up and take it.

The "negative" response is called motivation.
You want to take away motivation from anything alive? It dies.
And the "machine" has already been invented, in various forms. Crack cocaine, for instance.

Pain is a _good_ thing. Pain tells you to not stick your hand in the fire. Pain told our ancestors you that it isnt preferable to be eaten by that sabre tooth tiger. Hunger is pain. Pain, in short, is nature's way of telling you to stop doing something or do something about the current situation. Yes, its unpleasant. That's the _point_.

I meant bad in the short term. I understand it is good in the long term.

It's a spell to remove your soul, side effects: no emotions (or pseudo emotions, you may experience them briefly but not understand them) and no need to sleep.
Yes, i would definetely use it for:
more study time
less things to ruin my judgement

As tantalizing as something like this may seem during a low point I don't think I'd ever use it. Feeli pain in its many forms is what forces us to learn and to adapt ourselves. It's what tells us to stop fucking up and to get our shit together.

In your world, maybe everyone draws their reason to live from "negative" responses, but over here, motivation covers a whole rainbow spectrum. I would rather live in a world where everyone draws their reason to live from "positive" responses. When you take motivation away from something that's alive, it doesn't die, it's just not alive. It's surviving. Think of the neutral point as just plain breathing. But meh, that's all just philosophy.

Pain is naturally a bad thing. It takes one of strong mind and will to be able to use it.

Pain is one of the few things that limit a human. We can learn from it. Shutting off negative receptors entirely seems to me like that worst thing anyone can do.

Nope, I think I'd rather keep the pain. After all if you feel no pain, then how can you know happiness or pleasure? You'll have nothing to base it off of.

I would like to know if my hand is being accidentally crushed or burned. Pain is very bad, and we as human beings try to avoid it, but it's also the perfect warning signal.
As for all the emotional pain...I dunno really. From one point that does sound nice, plus I would no longer have to deal with all those sappy, emoing people. But just because you can't feel something doesn't mean the problem doesn't exist.
Not being able to being angry or sad because someone cheated or deceived us...would be like chopping off a portion of human soul.

The only thing that seperates positive stress from negative stress is perspective. So, no.

I'd rather not use it and keep the pain. Yes, it would hurt badly, but that's one of the reasons it exists. It prevents us from forgetting that we are human.

The problem is, what would feeling no negative things solve exactly? I don't think there's anything actually solved. Delayed, yes. Or made unnoticable. But not solved.

but the pain and suffering that we go through as people, keeps us human. with out certain emotions we wouldn't be anything but mindless drones to the march.
