Absolute Kitchen Necessities
0
Hey guys, I'm going to be going to university and, since I'm a huge foodie, that means I need to kit myself out with all the things a budding chef might need. I've been scanning through long pages all over the web filled with esoteric cooking gadgets, kick ass spice sets and high end cookware, and I'm having trouble figuring out what I think I need and what I really need.
So friends, what are the absolute bare necessities for a good kitchen?

Things a kitchen needs, stove, refrigerator, pots and pans, a colander, cooking utensils, a food processor, and stick blender. You don't need a bunch of fancy machines to make great food, learn to cook with the bare minimum.
As for spice racks, fine. But don't buy dried herbs (waste of money, no flavor)

As wonderful as it is to have things like crepe pans and lattice cutters, I too have had to cut back. Due to space (and weight requirements) I was only able to buy the basics.
You will definitely need at least one shallow pan, for cooking things like omelettes and sautéing. And a small pot, at least large enough for soup and rice.
Basic utensils include a spatula(whether metal or plastic depends if your pan is Teflon), a few knives, a pot spoon and possibly tongs if you fry things.
Depending on space constraints, it's up to you how many containers/Tupperware you can buy. As long as you have an assortment of sizes you would be fine. I've had moments where I have had containers way too large or small for the leftovers.
As Longevity said, nothing fancy is needed. Good luck and I would like to see what you end up making.

Do you live in a dormitory or will you have a flat/apartment/etc
It is also a matter of space, but my suggestion:
1) Chef's Knife
2) Paring Knife
3) Bread Knife/Serrated Knife
(Or if you have a knife set, just bring that and a steele/honer and a sharpener)
4) Medium/Large Cutting board
5) 1 medium sautee pan
6) 1 medium pot
If Living in a dorm:
7) Toaster Oven
8) If you can swing it, a Single Induction Stove
If elsewhere that has a kitchen:
BRING EVERYTHING......
jk, pretty much it depends on how much time you have to cook

I'm gonna bump this.
At least three different sizes of knives (small, medium, and large).
Bread knife.
Chopping board (duhh).
A peeler (sharp one at that too so I can peel most of the fruits as well).
I usually cook something simple yet tasty, so I won't need too many cooking kits. If we're talking about stuff in the fridge then I'd have quite a list.

I would say it depends on your style. If, like me, you're into Asian cuisine like Chinese and Japanese, then a Wok is definitely something you should have, on the other hand if you're more into cooking things slowly then a dutch oven (I definitely prefer it over a slow cooker) would be a good idea. Without knowing you're prefere style, the most that could be offered is that you should get a chef's knife set, pots and pans of various sizes, and the basic appliances of stove, oven, and refrigerator.
