It been bugging me for a while. I read weebs bitching about all the animu is in bd form now and i can't watch because i don't have one. Problem is a player is 49$... you can afford to preorder and buy monthly shipments of figs, items and limited editions of animes straight from Nippon every month, but can't afford a cheap bd player? Hell your ps4/ps3 are bd players.
In 2000 i had to switch to dvd from vhs/ld because the market was ending the vhs trend. That dvd/vcd/divx player cost me 129$ and dvd movies/animes where expensive as hell also. Now bd are still a few bucks more like 5-10$... but still even my poorest relative has a cheap shit one and red box.(my mother doesn't need one since she never uses her dvd player.)
I can understand the weebs in the third world and the few areas where tech is expensive to buy point, but these people i talking about come from north Europe and NA. I'm not saying everyone there can afford whatever the cost for one but if your spending 100-500$ or in the term they can understand 10,000 to 50,000 yen a month for figs/straps/artbooks/limited ed collectors set with a extra bonus BD and complaint about you don't have a bd player to play then aren't you complaining about a 50-60 investment to being up to date with tech?
Im not complaining about paying bills and buying food when i spend a lot on weeb stuff. That just the cost of hobby vs life. Living comes first. Not to equate a bd player to living, but in the area of vices and pleasures of entertainment... isn't better to buy the current device for future endeavors then be behind with beta tapes and 8-tracks?

Weebs don't wanna upgrade to something better and bitching about it, haha. Better off buying a PS3/blu-ray player, just a one time purchase that'll serve the owner for a looong time.
The blu-ray disc on the otherhand are pretty pricey.

You're gonna have to upgrade media format sooner or later.
Though for now it's not really necessary to have anime on Blu-ray, because the quality difference is not that noticeable. It's mainly if it comes with extra features or you prefer having the whole collection on less disks.
I have a PS3 so I really don't have to worry about having a DVD or Blu-ray player since it does both. Essentially if you're gonna get Blu-Ray disks in the future might as well get a PS3

But in the bigger picture, it's definitely not necessary at the moment, merely an advantage aha c:
