Best Laptop for Students

Try an HP G62-340US. Has an ... I think that Himari-chan and I are recommending the same laptop.
The best advice I have is to plan ahead with a laptop that you can use for 4+ years for just about anything. Shoot for these stats:
AMD Dual/Quad Core or Intel Core i Series
3+ GB of RAM
320 GB Hard Drive
As for brand, all I can say is stay away from Dell like it's the plague. My family got some Dell's and they constantly had issues, mine because of Vista and my Mom's charging port broke. Also, Dell Customer service sucks. I know that Toshiba laptops tend to be similarly priced to HP's for roughly the same features. (HP tends to include an HDMI out port on many of their laptops now) Lenovo also has some great laptops that look awesome (look up the IdeaPad).
And before I forget, for the money you are spending on this: Get some decent anti-virus ASAP. I've seen too many computers with the same virus lately and I don't want to see someone else suffer the same fate.

I run without an optical drive on my laptop. Anything disc related I just rip an ISO and install via network :3
Or install via a USB thumb drive. Remember, it's faster to install Windows 7 from USB drive than DVD (just an example).
