I've done tons of research recently, and just about everyone says the intel i5 2500k is the best for gaming. The only reason I'm getting the i7 2600k is because I'm also doing video editing (the i7 cost $100 more). The i5 2500k will cost $220 if you buy from newegg, or $180 if you buy from microcenter. You can also try combo deals or a barebones kit to see whatever's the best deal.
I was looking at SSDs, and I found this 64 gb Kingston SSD for only $70 (here's a newegg link).
this is a good deal, right?

[color=#2e1a6b]I've decided upon everything except for the graphics card. after reconsidering, I think that the radeon 6770 would greatly limit my game performance, considering how awesome the rest of my computer is.
here's the radeon 6770 that I was previously considering, here's a radeon 6850 and a GeForce GTX 460 1gb that I'm currently considering.
Of these 3, which one do you recommend? (I want to play at 1080 resolution)[/color

I would say don't go with the GTX 460. If I remember correctly, GTX 460's are not worth it and plus the 400 series get so hot. A 560 would be better. The remaining two, I have no clue. I didn't really look that much into their 6000 series.

I currently use that exact same card and to say the least, the 6850 is a nice card for its price, it can handle a bit of overclocking and can handle most of what you throw at it at 1920 x 1080 at high-med settings. From what I've seen though, the 560Ti does have better game performance overall, but I've never had the chance to use one myself.
er read that wrong, if you really need to budget it down to the 460, then the 6850 is slightly better benchmark wise

I built my computer, no problems, everything turned out awesome. thanks for all the advice. My little brother now wants a computer, so I'm trying to build one for him. here's the parts I'm looking at:
a Seagate barracuda 2 TB HD (5900 rpm) for $70
an intel i5 2500k processor for $150
a mid tower case w/ 500W PSU for $37
a saphire AMD radeon 6850 for $130
8 GB of RAM for $30
a MSI p67 motherboard for $65
a refurbished DVD burner for $15
the total for all this is $527
I'm not sure how good the seagate barracuda is, but considering its 2 TB for $70, we're ok if it's kinda slow.
I'm mostly concerned with the PSU that comes with the case; what's the worst that could happen?
and do we need any fans? the case doesn't have any included (he won't do any overclocking)

I never trust Seagate. Every one I've had has died on me, and I've been building PCs since 1999.
Also, why does nobody venture into AMD? Sure, they're cheaper, but hey... they're cheaper. Just bought my PC some upgrades, got a Phenom II X4 for $100 during the black friday sales. Shit's gonna be great.

Because when it comes to raw processing power the i3-7 family is giving AMD a beatdown so severe, it's not even funny. AMD is cheaper. (That's why I bought a laptop with an AMD CPU). However once you're into mid-range, Intel is way ahead in the game... especially how bad Bulldozer has done in general use. (For servers it's awesome and may rock in the future when multi-programming catches... however it doesn't fulfill the requirements the average user has *today*).

I wouldn't say beatdown...
Also, if you're buying a computer just for simple tasks, AMD produces far more than enough processing power. Even for most gaming needs, AMD preforms very well.
Intel really shines when you start multitasking or doing very processor intensive work, but for gaming means, you're spending more money than you have too.
I'm not bashing Intel or anything, I was more than happy with the performance of my Intel until the moment it finally died, but I'm just saying you can save some money and still get great performance out of an AMD. Their quad core line does very well in comparison to equivalent Intels for half the price.

My last computer died and went to hell during Hurricane Irene. I DO NOT MISS YOU
My dad was planning on buying a new computer for $600-700 (desktop)
My friend, looking at my now dead computer, thought it was the biggest pile of shit he'd ever seen. So he proposed I BUILD one. I saved about $400 building one.

The MOBO doesn't support USB 3.0 and you should really get at least an 7200 RPM disk for the system. Unfortunately hard disk prices are still inflated thanks to the flooding of Thailand. The PSU supplied with the case is likely shit tier, so go buy a reliable one (I've already posted tons on this, check the earlier posts) since a poor PSU can take your whole desktop to the grave.
